I created these images on assignment as a recent graduate from the University of California, Irvine. I traveled throughout Palestine, Israel, & Jordan in the Summer of 2011, speaking with over 80 influential people & organizations both on the ground and in government. We constantly traveled through checkpoints, visiting numerous cities including Bethlehem, Tel Aviv, Nazareth, Hebron, Amman, Jenin, Qalqilya, Ariel, East & West Jerusalem, Haifa, & many more.
We visited three refugee camps, met in the Knesset with members of the Netanyahu administration, we met members of Fatah, spoke with various non-profit organizations such as Bt’Selem, Wi’am, the Parent Circle, OCHA (a division of the UN), & The Quartet, amongst others. We also had the honor of meeting with His Excellency Prince Hassan of Jordan, as well as members of the Jordanian Senate.
Recognizing how much of an honor it was to meet with all these highly esteemed diplomats & respected people, the most rewarding experience was connecting & speaking with the ordinary citizens who live this reality every day of their lives.
In this informational age, each of us possess the power to act as our own media, in hopes to free ourselves of the biased outlets that incessantly spout propaganda. I took over 4,000 images in the region with the intent to spread awareness to those who might not otherwise know or care about what is happening here.
The psychological gaps in this occupation play a much larger role in preventing peace than the actual gaps do (it’s not that complicated), and it is my intention to lessen this gap through this documentary work, & shed light on a region of people who have suffered for too long without recognition & equity.
I won RAW Artists Photographer of the Year in 2012 for this body of work. This is only a small fraction of the photos I took for this ongoing & consistently challenging atrocity.
